Porcelain Tiles or Ceramic Tiles

Fontana Terrina Clay

Porcelain Tiles. You hear it everywhere when you are shopping for flooring. This tile is porcelain, that tile is porcelain. It can make a person wonder is everything porcelain and is it better than ceramic tile? The answer is…It depends on the application. Porcelain Tile by the definition in the Flooring Industry is that porcelain tiles are frost resistant and will absorb less than one half of a percent of liquids on the bisque of the tile. The bisque of the tile is in referring to the actual clay of the tile. If you are interested in doing something outdoors porcelain is the way to go. For indoor use there really is no difference between a ceramic tile and a porcelain tile.  You will be better off choosing a tile that you like and that you love to go into your house  whether that is a ceramic or a porcelain tile is up to you.

If you are worried about chipping the glaze application on the tile you can always check what it is rated for.  Glazes are rated as a I, II, III, IV, or V. I and II deal with wall tiles and decorative trim pieces a manufacturer might be using on the wall and cannot be used on the floor. For your house a Glaze Application of a III or better is suitable for anywhere in your home. For light Commercial projects you need some rating as a IV or better is good. For Heavy Commercial traffic you need to use  a tile with a glaze rating of a V.

But when you are shopping look at the colors you want to go in your house and see if the porcelain tile or the ceramic tile you are looking at has those. That is the more important thing than if the tile is porcelain or ceramic.
